Dear Community Members,
Muslim Ban 3.0 (“MB-3”) was signed yesterday afternoon. We are reviewing it to see how exactly it will be rolled out, but some general information based on what we know now is included below. Please note that this information is subject to change based on the various legal challenges that may be advanced in court. Please check back frequently for the most up-to-date information.
Part of MB-3 went into effect yesterday, September 24th. The remainder will go into effect on October 18th, 2017. Much of the old order (Muslim Ban 2.0), signed on March 6, 2017, also partially expires today. The portions of Muslim Ban 2.0 impacting refugees specifically will continue until October 24, 2017. Despite this change, the temporary court order placing the old order on hold is still active, until the U.S. Supreme Court’s hearing on October 10, 2017.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ, 8/14/2017) – Today, the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will join U.S. Congressman Bill Pascrell in a press conference 11:30 a.m. at the Municipal Courthouse in Secaucus, N.J.
Given the response from President Trump after the tragedy in Charlottesville, Va., and the increasing prominence of dangerous white supremacy groups, the representatives will call on action from the White House and our nation's leaders.
LOCATION: Municipal Court, 1203 Paterson Plank Rd, Secaucus, NJ 07094
TIME: 11:30 a.m.
DATE: Today, Monday, August 14, 2017
"We condemn this act of domestic terrorism, urge all Americans to denounce the racists and Islamophobes brought to that city by the ‘Unite the Right’ rally,” said James Sues, executive director of CAIR-NJ. “The reluctance of President Trump to call out these racist groups by name and denounce their ideology constitutes a failure of moral leadership and serves to further embolden the followers of this movement.”

CAIR New Jersey Action Alert:
Tell Congress to Protect Free Speech, Oppose Unconstitutional 'Israel Anti-Boycott Act'
(South Plainfield, 8/3/2017) – The New Jersey Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, today called on all citizens of New Jersey who value the Constitution to contact their elected representatives in Congress to urge them to oppose the "Israel Anti-Boycott Act."
CAIR and other civil rights organizations say that proposed legislation would violate the constitutionally-guaranteed free speech rights of American business owners and individuals who participate in the international boycott of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine territories.
Boycotts during the Civil Rights era in the US, such as the Montgomery Bus boycott against segregation or the boycott of companies enabling South African Apartheid have been employed successfully in support of civil and human rights and as an integral part of our political process.

The Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S. 720/H.R.1697) is a threat to the free speech of all Americans and is clearly unconstitutional. The act would charge those American business owners and individuals who participate in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement with criminal penalties resulting in up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
Introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Rob Portman (R-OH), and in the U.S. House by Representatives Juan Vargas (D-CA), Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and Brad Sherman (D-CA), the act has gained 45 co-sponsors in the Senate and 240 in the House.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 6/28/17) -- The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today joined Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah in calling for the resignation Board of Education Member Emma Anderson because of an Islamophobic remark she made at a public meeting of that board.
While Mayor Khairullah had the floor in a Prospect Park Board of Education meeting on June 27, 2017, and was expressing his position on an issue, Anderson interrupted with the statement, "This is not Sharia law, this is an orderly session."
Video: 'This is not Sharia law, this is an orderly session.'
“Anyone who is capable of using such divisive terms against me is capable of using similarly hostile terms against others in the community,” said Mayor Khairullah, “Therefore, I am calling for the immediate resignation of Board Member Emma Anderson and ask that the County Superintendent of Schools and the New Jersey Department of Education investigate the matter fully and take appropriate action based on the results of that investigation.”
“Bigoted statements like those made by Ms. Anderson are extremely offensive and demonstrate a level of intolerance that should disqualify her from serving on any organization overseeing the education of children,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues. “We applaud Prospect Park Mayor Khairullah for his courage and leadership in taking a stand against bigotry.”
