CAIR-NJ offers internships to students on a biannual basis. Interns work closely with all staff and are trained to adopt a multitude of skills throughout their tenure. They also develop professional skills and become privy to the operations of civic advocacy, non-profit, and public service.
If applicants do not follow the application guidelines, it will negatively impact their application.
WHY INTERN AT CAIR-NJ?
CAIR-NJ takes on a wide array of projects and activities that seek to empower and cater to the needs of the Muslim community. Interns receive hands-on experience and take leads on various projects including CAIR-NJ’s annual Muslim Day of Advocacy and Muslim Youth Leadership Intensive.
INTERNSHIP POSITIONS
Legal
- Works mainly with the Legal Department.
- Intern will be expected to take the lead on making initial contact with community members for intake.
- Intern will play a key role in maintaining communication and rapport with clients, as well as conduct legal research and engage in strategy development for cases.
Legal Research
- Works mainly with the Legal Department.
- Intern will play a key role in maintaining communication and rapport with clients, as well as conduct legal research and engage in strategy development for cases.
Editorial Writing
- Works mainly with the Communications Department.
- Intern will be expected to pitch and co-author op-eds as well as conduct editorial research.
Graphic Design
- Works mainly with the Communications Department.
- Intern will be expected to produce graphics for social platforms on a fast turnaround.
- Intern may contribute toward content plan for social media platforms and analytics.
Government Affairs
- Works mainly with the Government Affairs Department.
- Intern will be expected to support staff and take lead on aspects involving Muslim Day of Advocacy and research relevant policy issues.
Education & Training
- Works mainly with the Programs Department.
- Intern will be expected to take lead on aspects involving the Cultural and Religious Diversity Trainings and Know Your Right workshops.
- Intern will have a key role in the research and development of educational training materials for the community.
Operations Management & Development
- Works mainly with Operations Department
- Intern will be expected to support staff and take lead on aspects involving grant scouting and writing application components, and contribute toward grant reporting.
- Intern will have key role in plans surrounding office management, fundraising & donor relations, and perform administrative tasks.
- Sophomore, junior, or senior standing at an accredited U.S. university.
- Detail-oriented and creative; self-starter and can work under minimum supervision.
- Enthusiastic, optimistic, focused, and motivated.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Friendly and outgoing (comfortable speaking in public).
- Demonstrate the ability to follow through on various on-going and newly assigned tasks.
- Experience interacting with the Muslim community.
- Must be passionate about community engagement.
- Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- All graphic design interns must have experience working with Canva or demonstrate a willingness to learn.

*All applicants must submit a writing sample. This may be a drafted legal document, press release, blog post, or writing assignment. Maximum length: 5 pages. PDF FORMAT
*All Graphic Design applicants must also submit an original sample of graphic design work. This could be a school flyer or assignment.
INTERNSHIPS ARE PAID
All interns are paid a stipend. Interns receive reimbursement for parking costs. Interns may also receive academic credit or community service hours if arrangements are made between CAIR-NJ and the intern’s university. Interns are responsible for researching requirements and coordinating this effort.
TIMELINE
CAIR-NJ’s internship program is open throughout the year, and we accept applications on a rolling basis. Each session runs between the following months (with flexibility):
Winter/Spring: January – June
Summer/Fall: July – December
Due to the high volume of applicants, we recommend applying as soon as possible.
SCHEDULING
Internships are part-time and hybrid. Interns are expected to be in the office 1-2 days a week, depending on the sessions and scheduling. All interns must maintain a 14-hour workweek between the hours of 9am-5pm.
