Seeking help from CAIR-NJ

The CAIR-NJ Legal Department works to protect and extend the civil rights and civil liberties guaranteed primarily by the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution.

Generally, we represent individuals who have experienced religious discrimination or been targeted because of their religion. We also support other groups’ litigation with Amicus Curiae briefs to educate courts on these issues.

Types of cases we consider for individual representation:

Freedom of Religion: The right to be free from government interference with your decision to practice any religion, or no religion at all.

Equal Protection: The right to be free from illegal discrimination by the government or a private employer. For example, a government agency refuses to hire a Muslim woman.

Due Process: The right to a fair procedure to challenge the government inclusion on a watchlist.

Freedom from Government Misconduct: For example, government agents may target individuals or refuse to assist individuals because of their religion. If any government agent (police, FBI, etc.) wants to question you, please contact us for assistance.

Freedom of Speech: For example, a dean suspends a student for writing an article that endorses Islam.

Victims of Hate Crimes

We can only take a limited number of cases. If we decline to take your case, we may consider referring your complaint to either an outside attorney or to CAIR-NJ’s Advocacy Department, which provides non-legal advocacy assistance to help achieve justice for community members outside the legal process.

If your situation may fall within the parameters listed above, please file a complaint with our office below. All complaints and requests for help to CAIR-NJ must first go through a vetting process by our legal team. In many cases a positive outcome can be achieved with the use of non-legal advocacy measures. CAIR-NJ does not rush to file a lawsuit or run to the media without you, the complainant.

What cases does cair-nj not take?

CAIR-NJ does not handle standard immigration matters, general civil disputes, personal injury and medical malpractice, family law matters like divorce, or criminal defense cases except in instances where civil rights violations have occurred, such as racial profiling, wrongful arrests, or excessive force.
